athensmusicandarts: I’m very sorry to report that Mitchell Atkinson, (pictured left with his twin brother Watson) was killed in this accident this morning. Mitchell and Watson came to Athens in 1993 from their native Indiana and soon after opened up Pain & Wonder Tattoo Studio, which is still in its original location today in front of the 40 Watt Club, though under different ownership. Mitch and Watson parted ways from the shop to strike out on their own in the mid- to late 90s. But they were rock stars on the scene at the time, riding the second wave of artisan tattooing in the country, and giving vibrant color to the counterculture of Athens. To boot, both are incredibly talented artists and equally kind, goodhearted souls. For sure, Mitchell was known for his wild streak, and lived a rock and roll lifestyle, but he left his indelible, creative touch on countless people far and wide. He will be greatly, greatly missed.
